NIGERIA: Police Debunk False Terror Alert In Abuja, Arrest Suspect For Incitement
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Nigeria Police Force has strongly debunked a viral video circulating on social media claiming that a terrorist attack is ongoing in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the Police described the video as “entirely false, misleading, and malicious.”
The Force stated categorically that no such terrorist incident occurred in Abuja.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the video was deliberately created using misleading and recycled footage from online sources with the intention of causing panic, inciting public fear, and undermining confidence in the nation’s security architecture.
Following credible intelligence and digital forensic analysis, the Police have arrested one Pam Joseph in connection with the creation and dissemination of the false video.
The suspect is currently in custody and will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are concluded.
The Nigeria Police warned that while citizens have the right to freedom of expression, this right does not include the deliberate spread of misinformation capable of threatening public peace and national security.
The Force urged members of the public to always verify information before sharing it and to refrain from any actions that could incite fear or disorder.
It reiterated its commitment to monitoring digital spaces and taking decisive action against those who spread false or misleading information.
This development comes amid growing concerns over the increasing use of social media to spread fake security alerts in major citie
s across the country.
