NIGERIA: Makinde to begin annual leave August 10, deputy governor takes charge

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State will proceed on his annual leave from August 10 to September 11, 2026, following approval by the Oyo State House of Assembly.

The approval was granted during Thursday’s plenary after lawmakers considered a letter from the governor notifying the Assembly of his intention to proceed on leave in line with constitutional provisions.

Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal will oversee the affairs of the state during the governor’s absence, while Makinde is expected to resume official duties on September 14.

The governor’s letter was read by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of the Speaker, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin.

After deliberations, members of the Assembly unanimously approved the request and expressed confidence in the deputy governor’s ability to ensure the smooth administration of the state during the period.

The annual leave request is in compliance with the 1999 Constitution, which requires a governor to formally notify the state legislature before proceeding on leave or travelling outside the country.

Makinde similarly proceeded on annual leave around the same period in 2025 and returned ahead of the coronation of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, on September 26, 2025.
