NIGERIA: Four Arrested as Police Seize Truck Carrying Military Uniforms, Suspected Drugs
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
Four suspects have been arrested after operatives of the Lagos State Police Command intercepted a truck loaded with military camouflage uniforms and cartons of suspected hard drugs allegedly being transported out of Lagos.
The Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, disclosed this on Tuesday during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Ikeja, saying the truck was intercepted along the Lekki-Epe corridor following intelligence reports.
According to the police commissioner, the vehicle contained several sacks of military camouflage uniforms alongside cartons of different types of suspected drugs.
“We received information and swung into action. The vehicle conveying the sacks was intercepted while moving out of Lagos State, and those carrying them were arrested,” Fatai said.
He disclosed that preliminary investigations indicated that the consignment was headed for the South-East, adding that efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the shipment.
The commissioner expressed concern over the possible use of military uniforms by criminal elements, noting that investigations were ongoing to determine the intended destination and purpose of the items.
“With the trend of events across the country, especially in areas affected by banditry and other violent crimes, we have seen criminal elements wearing military uniforms. We do not yet know what these uniforms were meant for, and that is why the investigation is ongoing,” he added.
The four suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
