NIGERIA: Army Orders Probe into Alleged Assault on UNIOSUN Students

The Nigerian Army has ordered an investigation into allegations that newly recruited personnel assaulted and harassed students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo Main Campus, following reports that recruits allegedly invaded student hostels and surrounding residential areas.

The allegations, raised by students, residents and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, claimed that the recruits physically assaulted male students, intimidated residents, subjected some female students to degrading treatment and allegedly stole personal belongings during the incident.

The development sparked widespread concern among students, parents and civil society groups, who called for an urgent investigation and accountability over the alleged misconduct.

Responding to the allegations, the Army Public Relations Officer at Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, Major Yahaya Ibrahim, said the Commandant had directed an immediate investigation to establish the facts.

Ibrahim said, “The Nigerian Army exists to protect all citizens, especially the youth, who are the future of the nation. Any conduct that falls short of that mandate is unacceptable. No student or law-abiding citizen should ever feel unsafe or be subjected to harassment, intimidation or assault by those entrusted with the security of lives and property.”

He added, “The Commandant has ordered an investigation to ascertain the facts of the incident and bring perpetrators to justice.”

The Army also called on the National Association of Nigerian Students to submit evidence and witness statements to support the investigation.

Ibrahim assured that any personnel found culpable would be sanctioned in accordance with military regulations.

He said, “We therefore give our firm assurance that any personnel found guilty will face the full weight of military law.”

The Army maintained that the alleged actions do not reflect the values and training of its personnel and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, while also expressing readiness to engage with student leaders to resolve the matter and prevent a recurrence.
