MALAWI: Spanner MW Defends Public Appeal for Nigeria Guinness World Record Attempt
By Smile Hamilton
Malawian speed eater Austin Awali, popularly known as Spanner MW, has defended his decision to seek public support for his upcoming trip to Nigeria, where he is expected to attempt a Guinness World Record.
The criticism began after Spanner appealed for sponsorship, with some people arguing that he should use money from his previous winnings, including K20 million he won in Nigeria last year and more than K2 million earned in South Africa earlier this year.
Speaking during a TikTok Live session, Spanner said many people overestimate the value of the K20 million prize, explaining that a significant portion of the money was spent on various expenses.
He also revealed that he does not yet have a manager, saying he has only been involved in the sport for one year and is still building his career.
Spanner is expected to travel to Nigeria later this week and says he has already secured a flight ticket. However, he is still seeking donations to cover accommodation, local transport and other travel-related expenses.
Meanwhile, some supporters have called on the government and the private sector to assist Spanner, arguing that his achievements continue to raise Malawi’s profile on the international stage.
- The speed eater has gained popularity both locally and abroad through competitive eating contests, with many Malawians closely following his journey as he prepares for the record attempt.
