MALAWI: Rumphi Traditional Leaders Petition Mutharika Over Chikulamayembe Appointment
By Smile Hamilton Malawi
Traditional leaders in Rumphi District, backing Mtima Gondwe as the rightful heir, have once again petitioned President Peter Mutharika, urging him to nullify the appointment of Joseph Bongololo Gondwe as Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe.
The leaders argue that the appointment lacked proper consultation and violated established traditional protocols. They have also raised concerns over questions of legitimacy, unresolved legal matters, and continued conflict and violence in the district.
Speaking after presenting the petition to the Rumphi District Council on Friday, Group Village Headman Kamuzinga said the chiefs are seeking the President’s direct intervention. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into what they describe as irregularities, breaches of protocol, and possible legal violations.
“They must look into this matter carefully because what has happened is not in line with our traditions and the law,” said Kamuzinga.
Rumphi District Council Human Resource Officer Allan Nyirenda confirmed receiving the petition and assured the traditional leaders that the letter will be forwarded to President Mutharika for cons
ideration.
