About 310 families in Zomba City have been affected by heavy rains that have destroyed several houses, with 30 families currently being accommodated in temporary shelters in Likangala and Chambo townships.
According to Zomba City Council spokesperson Aubrey Moses, the rains have caused widespread damage to houses, household property, and roads, while also injuring 12 people.
Councillor for Chimwali Ward, Harry Manda, said he is deeply concerned with the disasters occurring in various areas due to the persistent rains, which fell between March 15 and 18, 2026.
Manda added that in his area alone, about 70 houses have been affected, and one of the major challenges is the lack of adequate space to relocate those impacted.
He further indicated that the number of affected households could rise once full reports are received from other areas.
