MALAWI: MHEN Donates 60 Bicycles to Boost Child Vaccination Efforts in Chitipa
By Smile Hamilton
The Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) has donated 60 bicycles set to be distributed to 30 Mother Care Groups (MCGs) across Chitipa District, in a move aimed at strengthening child vaccination outreach in remote communities.
The initiative is designed to enhance the mobility of MCG members who play a critical role in ensuring that no child misses out on life-saving immunization services, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
Speaking to African Culture TV, MHEN Assistant Project Officer Mphatso Kamangira said the bicycles will significantly ease transportation challenges that have long affected the groups’ operations.
“The new support is going to make travelling easier, a factor that previously prevented MCGs from tracking down children who missed vaccinations in remote areas,” said Kamangira.
He further commended the Mother Care Groups for their tireless efforts, emphasizing that their grassroots advocacy is key to achieving universal health coverage. “By tracking under-five children and encouraging immunization, these groups serve as a frontline defense against preventable diseases,” he added.
Chairperson for Zambwe Mother Care Group, Beatrice Simfukwe, welcomed the donation, saying lack of transport has been a major barrier to their work.
She said the bicycles will now enable members to reach more households efficiently, ensuring that children who previously missed vaccinations are identified and ass
isted in time.
