Government has officially commissioned the M01 road stretch from Crossroads to Kanengo in Lilongwe, in a move expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and accelerate economic activity in the capital city.
Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango presided over the commissioning ceremony on Friday, describing the project as a symbol of Malawi’s commitment to modern infrastructure and sustainable urban development.
“This road is a game changer for Lilongwe. It will improve mobility, reduce travel time, and create a safer transport system for our people,” said Mhango. “It also reflects government’s determination to invest in projects that directly impact the lives of Malawians.”
The 9.5-kilometre road has been constructed with financial and technical support from China at an estimated cost of about K44 billion, making it one of the major road infrastructure investments in the city in recent years.
Designed as a dual carriageway, the road is equipped with modern solar-powered street lighting, a development aimed at enhancing visibility, improving security, and reducing reliance on conventional electricity.
Mhango further highlighted that the project is part of a broader national strategy to upgrade key road networks across the country to meet growing urban demands. “We are committed to transforming our cities into efficient and competitive economic hubs through improved infrastructure,” he added.
Some motorists and business operators in Lilongwe have welcomed the development, saying it will ease movement of goods and reduce transport costs. One commuter said, “This road will save us time and make driving safer, especially during peak hours.”
Construction of the road began in 2017, and its completion marks a significant step towards improving transport efficiency along one of the busiest corridors in Lilongwe, connecting residential, industrial, and c
ommercial areas.
