By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has placed a ban on the use of firecrackers, commonly known as knockouts, as part of security measures for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
In a statement on Saturday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, announced that the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, issued the directive to prioritize the safety of lives and property during the festive season.
According to Disu, firecrackers often cause unwarranted panic, pose serious fire hazards, and could lead to incidents with catastrophic consequences.
“This ban is implemented to ensure the safety of all residents and to protect lives and property throughout the festive season,” Disu said. “The use of these items creates unnecessary fear and anxiety in the community. This ban is essential for maintaining peace and safety. Anyone found using or selling firecrackers will be arrested and prosecuted in line with the law.”
The police called on community leaders and stakeholders to support efforts to sensitize the public on the dangers of firecrackers and the importance of adhering to the directive.
In addition to this measure, residents were encouraged to report violations of the ban or any suspicious activities through emergency hotlines provided by the police.
“We urge all residents to remain vigilant and support us in maintaining a safe environment,” Adeh added.
Assuring residents of their commitment to ensuring a peaceful festive season, the FCT Police Command reiterated its dedication to law and order. Meanwhile, a robust security plan has been activated across the territory to prevent any form of unrest during the holidays.
