NIGERIA: Kano Governor Pledges Rehabilitation and Educational Support For Released Minors
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has committed to providing rehabilitation, educational support, and reintegration assistance for 76 minors recently released after their detention in connection with the #EndBadGovernance protest.
On Tuesday night, Yusuf expressed his intention to help the young people reintegrate into society and resume their education, assuring families that the government would work to reunite them with their children and support their journey forward.
The governor stated he was unaware of the minors’ arrests until their arraignment at the Federal High Court in Abuja. He immediately instructed the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to oversee the case, underscoring the state’s dedication to safeguarding the children’s welfare.
Yusuf visited the Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital, where the minors received medical evaluations to assess their physical and mental well-being.
Speaking about the support system being established, he emphasised the importance of addressing the health needs of these young people as part of their transition.
In his statement, Yusuf expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his role in facilitating the children’s release, noting the federal government’s compassionate intervention.
He also praised the minors’ families, acknowledging the resilience and maturity they showed throughout the ordeal. “Their composure and resilience are truly admirable,” he said.
The governor affirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring these minors have a path forward, pledging to provide them with resources for education and small-scale business ventures.
He stressed the need for them to continue their studies, so they can contribute meaningfully to Kano State’s development.
“By enrolling them in local schools and offering rehabilitation opportunities, we aim to provide these children with a second chance to lead productive lives,” Yusuf said, emphasising that the incident should not define their futures.
