NIGERIA: Rivers Police Launch Probe into Alleged Extortion by Officers

The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into allegations of extortion involving a police officer and other personnel following the circulation of a video and reports on social media.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the Command said it had taken cognizance of allegations that ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other officers extorted members of the public while carrying out their duties.
The statement noted that the Command views the allegations seriously, describing such conduct as inconsistent with the ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, Olugbenga A. Adepoju, ordered the arrest, detention and immediate investigation of the officers involved.
According to the statement, the Commissioner reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on extortion and other forms of misconduct.
“Extortion, illegal collection of money and any form of unprofessional conduct by police personnel will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the statement quoted the Commissioner.
The police boss emphasized the need for officers to conduct themselves in a manner that promotes public trust, accountability and respect for human rights.
He also assured residents that the investigation would be thorough, transparent and impartial.
“Any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary actions in accordance with the provisions of the law and the Nigeria Police Act,” he stated.
The Command commended members of the public for reporting incidents of alleged misconduct and encouraged citizens to continue using established complaint channels to report corruption, abuse of office and other unethical practices by police personnel.
The Rivers State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to professional policing, discipline, integrity and quality service delivery across the state.
