Family, friends, fellow photographers and members of the public are today escorting celebrated Malawian photographer Peter Kansengwa, popularly known as Ras Peter, to his final resting place, bringing to a close the life of a creative whose work captured some of the country’s most memorable moments.
Peter’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief across social media, with tributes describing him as a gifted photographer, a humble soul and a man whose infectious smile and passion for storytelling through images earned him admiration from people across different walks of life.
Among the emotional messages shared was one from a close friend who said Peter was more than just a photographer.
“Some lives cross our paths as strangers but leave as family. You were one of those rare souls—a stranger who became a friend, and a photographer who became a brother,” reads part of the tribute.
The mourner added: “Today, with deep sorrow, I celebrate your life. You were a free spirit, always smiling, always full of life. With a heavy heart, I bid you farewell, my brother. You will forever be remembered for your passion for photography, your love for people and your unique spirit.”
Throughout his career, Peter built a reputation for capturing authentic moments with creativity and professionalism. Colleagues say he used his camera not only to document events but also to tell stories that connected people and preserved memories for generations.
As the funeral procession makes its way to the cemetery today, mourners continue to celebrate a life defined by talent, kindness and service. Though Peter Kansengwa has taken his final journey, his legacy will live on through the photographs he created and the countless lives he touched.
