MALAWI: Bushiri Secures 10 Buses to Repatriate Malawians from South Africa
By Smile Hamilton
Spokesperson for Shepherd Bushiri has announced that 10 buses have been secured to transport Malawians wishing to return home from South Africa, where foreign nationals have been affected by xenophobic violence.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Bushiri said the buses will pick up passengers from Johannesburg and Pietermaritzburg. He added that each bus will have personnel trained to provide first aid and other emergency medical assistance to passengers who may need it during the journey.
However, Bushiri said the shortage of foreign currency remains a major challenge to increasing the number of buses, explaining that transport companies require payment in foreign currency.
He said discussions are ongoing with banks and other relevant stakeholders to find solutions that will make it possible to deploy more buses for Malawians returning from South Africa.
Bushiri also thanked the Malawi High Commission in South Africa for its cooperation and support, as well as individuals and organizations assisting Malawians making their way back home.
