A nine-month-old child has died after being trampled by a stray elephant in Kiboko, Makueni County, in a tragic incident that has renewed concerns over human-wildlife conflict in the region.
The child’s mother, Faith Musenya, sustained injuries during the early morning attack while heading to work at a farm with her two children. She was rushed to Makindu Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
Confirming the incident, KWS Senior Warden Lenguro Pamu said the elephant attacked the family, killing the infant on the spot.
“Unfortunately, Faith lost her nine-month-old child during the incident,” said Pamu.
The tragedy has prompted renewed calls for the Kenya Wildlife Service to strengthen measures to contain wildlife within protected areas, with leaders warning that residents continue to face danger from roaming elephants.
