Government says about 10,000 Malawians are stranded in South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks, and several interventions are being implemented to facilitate their safe return home.
Commissioner for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), Wilson Moleni, said government has deployed a task force to South Africa to support the registration of affected Malawians, facilitate the processing of emergency travel documents, and coordinate their repatriation.
Moleni said the task force is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure that Malawians who wish to return home are assisted as quickly as possible.
He has since appealed to development partners, the private sector, humanitarian organizations, faith-based institutions, transport operators, and corporate entities to support the repatriation exercise.
According to Moleni, the scale of the situation requires collective support from various stakeholders to ensure the safe and dignified return of the affected citizens.
He emphasized that government remains committed to bringing back every Malawian who wishes to return home from South Africa.
