The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its presidential ticket to the Southern part of Nigeria for a single four-year term.
The decision was reached and adopted at the party’s National Convention on Saturday, following a motion moved by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, the member representing Ogbaru Constituency in Anambra State at the 10th National Assembly.
According to the resolution, after the completion of the single four-year term by a southern candidate, the party’s presidential ticket will automatically zone to the Northern region for the subsequent election cycle.
The zoning arrangement is expected to significantly shape the contest for the party’s 2027 presidential ticket. It immediately opens the field for prominent southern politicians, including former Anambra State Governor Mr. Peter Obi and other interested southern aspirants, to collect and submit nomination forms.
Party delegates at the convention overwhelmingly endorsed the motion, describing the arrangement as a deliberate step towards promoting national unity and equitable power rotation between the North and South.
The NDC’s decision comes as political activities ahead of the next general elections begin to intensify across
the country.
