NIGERIA: ICPC Opposes El-Rufai’s Fresh Bail Application, Court Adjourns Hearing To May 13
By Onoja Baba
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has opposed a fresh bail application filed by former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, in his ongoing corruption case.
At the resumed hearing of the matter on Tuesday at the Kaduna State High Court, counsel to the ICPC informed the court that they had just been served with the defendant’s further affidavit and needed time to respond adequately.
Following this, the court adjourned proceedings to May 13, 2026, for the hearing of the fresh bail application.
This is the second bail application by El-Rufai. The court had earlier refused him bail, citing the likelihood of flight risk due to his influence and resources, alleged interference with his arrest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, refusal to surrender travel documents and devices, and concerns over possible interference with witnesses and evidence.
The presiding judge, Honourable Justice D.H. Khobo, had ruled that bail is discretionary and must serve the interest of justice.
The court also noted that El-Rufai failed to challenge key allegations in the ICPC’s counter-affidavit, which were therefore deemed admitted.
El-Rufai is to remain in ICPC custody pending the commencement of his trial, which the court ordered to be accelerated.
The ICPC has filed a counter-affidavit opposing the latest bail application and reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice is serv
ed in the matter.
