NIGERIA: APC Warns Against Return To “Years of the Locusts” As 2027 Approaches
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has cautioned Nigerians against being deceived by opposition figures now coalescing under the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a strongly worded official statement signed by its spokesman, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, released on Monday, the party described the emerging opposition coalition as a group of recycled politicians who are attempting to repackage themselves as national saviours despite their long records in previous governments.
The Lagos APC reminded citizens that the country has moved irreversibly beyond what it termed the dark and wasteful era known as the Years of the Locusts.
It urged Nigerians not to fall for what it called the hollow language of redemption coming from familiar political actors who once occupied top positions as governors, ministers, senators, vice presidents and party leaders.
The statement posed a direct challenge to the opposition leaders, “if they now claim to offer solutions, where was their patriotism and competence when they held power and presided over vast national resources?” It accused them of wasting decades through policy drift, fiscal indiscipline and leadership inertia, only to re-emerge with sanctimonious posturing after exhausting their relevance in previous platforms.
Describing the ADC coalition as a gathering of displaced power brokers and frustrated office seekers united more by desperation and personal ambition than by any clear vision or principle, the Lagos APC questioned the group’s democratic credentials.
It pointed to what it said was a history of internal rancour, intrigue, opportunistic defections and ideological inconsistency, arguing that such a formation lacks the moral standing to lecture Nigerians on democracy.
The party contrasted the opposition’s record with the current administration’s bold reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which it said are confronting long-standing structural problems even though they are painful in the short term.
These reforms, according to the statement, represent a future-facing approach that stands in sharp contrast to the excuses and unfulfilled promises left behind by many of today’s opposition figures during their time in office.
The Lagos APC declared that 2027 will not serve as a pathway for Nigeria to regress to the era of squandered opportunities, policy somersaults and leadership by rhetoric. It warned that subtle blackmail, arm-twisting and mercenary rhetoric will not return power to what it called a coalition of yesterday’s men.
“Power is earned through vision, credibility and the trust of the people. It is never served à la carte to failed actors seeking a second bite at history,” the statement said.
The party expressed confidence that the Nigerian electorate has grown wiser and more discerning, and will use the 2027 elections as a moment of democratic reckoning to separate genuine leadership from recycled ambition.
It concluded that the years of the locusts are gone forever and will remain buried in the graveyard of f
ailed political experiments.
