NIGERIA: President Tinubu Condemns Killings In Plateau, Kaduna, Vows Punishment For Perpetrators
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has strongly condemned the recent killings and abductions by gunmen in Jos, Plateau State, and Kahir village in Kaduna State, describing the attacks as barbaric, cowardly, and an affront to everything Nigeria stands for.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed outrage over the attack on Angwan Rukuba district in Jos and the killing and abduction of wedding guests in Kahir village, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
“Anyone who will sneak under the cover of the night and kill defenceless citizens as done in Jos and Kahir village, is a heartless coward,” the President said.
He warned that the attackers’ intention was not only to cause harm but also to trigger a spiral of reprisal attacks and further bloodletting.
President Tinubu directed security agencies to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and those spreading misinformation capable of inflaming tensions.
He cautioned some sections of the media against insinuating that the attacks were religiously motivated, stressing that such reports could endanger lives.
The President reaffirmed that security agencies are actively working on the situation and urged public cooperation to maintain peace and protect lives and property.
He commended the safe return of two abducted victims from Kahir village and called for the immediate rescue of the remaining abductees.
“I urge our security agencies to be more proactive in preventing these attacks by acting on early warning intelligence. All the remaining abductees from Kahir village must be rescued immediately,” he said.
President Tinubu commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State for his efforts in containing the situation in Jos and Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State for supporting rescue and containment operations.
He assured both states of his administration’s full support.
The President commiserated with the families of those killed and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured. He disclosed that the government is currently acquiring more sophisticated equipment to enable security agencies to track and smash criminal networks in real time.
The attacks have once again raised concerns over the persistent insecurity in parts of the North-Central and North-West regions, even as the federal government pledges decisive action to bring
the perpetrators to justice.
