NIGERIA: Tinubu Donates Salaries To Armed Forces Welfare Fund On 74th Birthday
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the creation of a special welfare fund to support members of the Nigerian Armed Forces and their families.
The initiative was unveiled as part of activities marking his 74th birthday.
The President said the fund is designed to cater to serving personnel, those injured in the line of duty, and families of fallen heroes.
In a statement, he directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to establish a dedicated account for the fund.
He said: “On this my 74th birthday, I celebrate the valiant men and women of our Armed Forces.”
Tinubu also announced that all his salaries since assuming office would be donated to the fund as seed capital.
The fund is expected to provide support for wounded personnel, including those who have lost limbs, as well as dependents of deceased service members.
He called on governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector, and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the initiative.
“I call on our Governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector, my friends and all well-wishers to support this initiative. Details of the account will be made available in due course.”
The President described the move as a moral responsibility to support those who serve the nation.
“We must never forget those who stand in harm’s way for our peace, nor the sacrifices borne by their families. This is not charity. It is duty. And we will fulfil it.”
Further details on the fund and contribution process are expected to be announced by the
relevant authorities.
