NIGERIA: AEDC Warns Abuja Residents Against Tampering With Electricity Assets, Cites Safety And Legal Risks
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) has issued a strong public advisory warning customers, communities, and estate associations against handling, moving, repairing, or tampering with its assets, including transformers, prepaid meters, and power lines.
In a statement released on Friday, AEDC emphasised that all its equipment and infrastructure remain the sole property of the company and can only be handled by authorised personnel.
The distribution company stated that any unauthorised interference with electricity infrastructure is illegal and constitutes a breach of Nigerian law and AEDC regulations.
It warned that such actions pose serious safety risks, including fire outbreaks, electrocution, and equipment damage. The company also noted that unauthorised tampering may invalidate insurance cover for affected properties.
AEDC advised the public to refrain from moving, opening, or attempting to repair any of its equipment without prior official authorisation.
Customers experiencing faults, damage, or power outages are urged to report them promptly through the company’s official channel.
The advisory comes amid growing concerns over illegal tampering and vandalism of electricity infrastructure in parts of the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas.
AEDC called on all customers and stakeholders to work together to safeguard lives, property, and critical national
infrastructure.
