NIGERIA: President Tinubu Mourns Passing Of Former Super Eagles Coach Adegboye Onigbinde

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep condolences over the death of High Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, a renowned football administrator and former head coach of the Super Eagles who passed away on Monday at the age of 88.
The President described the late Onigbinde as a distinguished figure whose contributions shaped Nigerian football for decades.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended heartfelt sympathy to the family, associates, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the National Sports Commission (NSC), professional colleagues, and fans of the departed coach.
He highlighted Onigbinde’s historic role as the first indigenous head coach of the Super Eagles in 1982 and commended his leadership in guiding the team to the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984.
The President praised the late Modakeke high chief for his dedication to grassroots football development and for strengthening football administration across Nigeria.
President Tinubu noted that Onigbinde would be remembered for his discipline, integrity, foresight, and deep passion for the round-leather game.
President Tinubu prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed coach and asked God to grant comfort and strength to his family during this period of grief.
He affirmed that Onigbinde’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Nigerian footballers an
d administrators.
