The Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, has successfully led Martyrs’ Day commemorations in the area of Senior Chief Mkumbira, Nkhata Bay, including a memorial worship service.
Upon his arrival, the Minister was welcomed by Senior Chief Mkumbira and the District Commissioner for Nkhata Bay, David Kayiwonanga Gondwe.
At Kakumbi Cemetery, Minister Mhango laid a wreath alongside the Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture, Alfred Gangata, before proceeding to the Memorial Pillar to lead dignitaries in another wreath-laying ceremony.
He later joined members of the clergy at Chipopoma Ground for a worship service, which concluded the day’s official program.
Speaking after the service, Minister Mhango said, “Today, we honour the memory of our heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives for the freedom we enjoy. Their courage remains a guiding light for all Malawians.”
Martyrs’ Day is observed annually to pay tribute to the country’s fallen heroes and heroines. This year’s commemoration was held under the theme: “The Martyrs: A Great Model of Patriotism.”
The day also marks the tragic events of 3 March 1959, when a group of Malawians in Nkhata Bay protested against colonial rule. Police forces opened fire on the crowd, resulting in several deaths. These individuals are remembered as national martyrs who laid down their lives for Malawi’s
independence.
