NIGERIA: Organised Labour Suspends Strike In FCT After Conciliatory Meeting With Minister Wike
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Joint Union Action Committee representing workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration has officially suspended its industrial action and directed all staff to resume duties immediately following a breakthrough conciliatory meeting with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The resolution came after an extended negotiation session that stretched into the early hours of Tuesday morning, facilitated at the instance of Senator Mohammed Bomoi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory.
The meeting involved key leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress alongside the minister, addressing longstanding grievances that had prompted the strike action.
In a joint statement signed by Nuhu Toro, Secretary General of the TUC, and Benson Upah, Acting General Secretary of the NLC, on Tuesday, the parties agreed that no worker would face victimisation for participating in the industrial action. All outstanding cases related to the dispute pending at the National Industrial Court are to be withdrawn without delay.
Consequently, all members of the Joint Union Action Committee along with affiliates of the NLC and TUC have been instructed to return to their workstations with immediate effect to restore normal operations across FCTA offices and services in Abuja.
The development ends a disruptive period that had paralysed activities in major government secretariats, schools, hospitals, and other public institutions since the strike commenced in mid-January over unresolved welfare issues including wage awards, promotion arrears, salary distortions, pension remittances, and tenure-relat
ed concerns.
