The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has attributed 95 per cent of road fatalities in Kenya to human behaviour, mainly over-speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Speaking during a road safety training for Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers in Nanyuki, NTSA Central Region Manager Bora Nguyo said risky driving habits remain the leading cause of fatal road crashes nationwide.
“Most road deaths are caused by human error. Over-speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol directly compromise road safety,” Nguyo said, adding that the training targets behavioural change among drivers to reduce fatalities.
Laikipia East Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Muli called for mandatory refresher courses for all PSV drivers, urging NTSA to work with matatu SACCOs to institutionalise annual road safety training.
“Drivers must strictly adhere to traffic rules. Refresher courses should be held annually to reinforce compliance and reduce accidents,” Muli said.
NTSA says it will continue rolling out similar training programmes across the country as part of efforts to improve road safety and reduce preventable deaths on K
enyan roads.
