President Peter Mutharika has acknowledged that the year 2025 has been marked by serious challenges, including shortages of food, fuel, foreign exchange and fertiliser.
In his Christmas and New Year message to the nation, President Mutharika said that since assuming office in October, his administration has been focused on tackling deep-rooted economic and systemic problems facing the country. “My focus and energy since taking office have been directed at addressing the systemic challenges confronting our nation,” he said.
The President noted that despite the difficulties, his government remains committed to restoring stability and confidence in the economy. He said he is entering 2026 with optimism and determination. “I look to 2026 with great expectation as we work to restore economic stability and uplift the living standards of every Malawian,” Mutharika said.
Meanwhile, the Malawi leader called on citizens to celebrate the festive season responsibly and to be mindful of those who continue to face hardships within their communities. “As we celebrate, let us remember our brothers and sisters who are still struggling and extend a helping hand where possible,” he said.
President Mutharika concluded his message by urging Malawians to maintain peace during the festivities and into the new year. He called on the nation to embrace hard work, unity and patriotism. “Let us uphold peace, welcome the new year with renewed dedication, and work together to rebuild our nation,” he said.
