South Sudan’s National Elections Commission (NEC) has confirmed that constituency boundaries used during the 2010 general elections will also apply to the December 2026 polls, citing delays in conducting a national population census.
The commission announced that a total of 102 national constituencies will be maintained across the country’s 10 states and three administrative areas.
Speaking during the announcement, NEC Chairperson Prof. Abednego Akok Kacuol said the decision is legally mandated and follows an agreement to separate the electoral process from the pending population census and constitutional review.
“The National Elections Commission hereby declares the 102 constituencies in accordance with the ten states and three administrative areas,” Akok stated.
According to the commission, constituency distribution is as follows: Central Equatoria (14), Eastern Equatoria (11), Western Equatoria (8), Jonglei (17), Unity (7), Upper Nile (12), Lakes (8), Northern Bahr el Ghazal (9), Western Bahr el Ghazal (4), and Warrap (12).
NEC said it will publish detailed constituency names and descriptions on its official website and through print media. Akok urged the public to rely solely on official NEC platforms for accurate electoral information.
The 2026 general elections, which have been repeatedly delayed since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, are widely viewed as a crucial milestone for the country’s peace process and long-term political stability.
