Inspector General of Police Richard Luhanga has warned that security agencies will not tolerate any form of lawlessness during the festive season, saying police officers are on high alert to ensure public safety.
Luhanga made the remarks in Lilongwe on Wednesday night, where he urged Malawians to remain vigilant and to take personal responsibility for their safety, especially on the country’s roads, which often record increased traffic accidents during the holidays.
“The Malawi Police Service will not allow lawlessness to take root during this festive season. We are committed to protecting lives and property,” Luhanga said.
He was speaking during a Christmas carols event held at Police Headquarters in Area 30 and organised by the Malawi Police Service. Luhanga said officers across the country have been instructed to tighten security measures and increase both foot and vehicle patrols.
“We have directed our officers to intensify patrols and maintain a visible presence so that citizens can celebrate in peace and security,” he added.
Luhanga also appealed to road users to observe traffic regulations, noting that reckless driving and alcohol abuse are major causes of accidents during festive periods.
Meanwhile, Reverend Julius Suwinda, who oversees chaplaincy services within the Malawi Police Service, said the Christmas carols event was aimed at giving officers time to reflect on God’s love and their duty to serve the nation with integrity.
“This occasion reminds our officers of God’s love for all people and the importance of serving the public with discipline, compassion and respect,” Reverend Suwinda said.
