By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
A fatal road accident along Ikorodu Road, Lagos, has resulted in the death of an eight-month-old baby and an adult female following a collision involving two commercial buses.
In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and the Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, the incident occurred earlier today opposite Olabode House, between Anthony and Obanikoro.
The statement noted that preliminary findings indicate that a red Tata commercial bus travelling from Palmgroove towards Anthony lost control while at high speed, crossed the median barrier and collided with an oncoming Volkswagen commercial bus conveying passengers in the opposite direction.
Ten passengers, including both drivers, were rescued from the wreckage with varying degrees of injury. Six victims were evacuated from the Volkswagen bus, while four were rescued from the Tata bus. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals by the Lagos State Ambulance Service, while officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit recovered the remains of the deceased.
The statement reads: “The impact of the collision led to the instant death of an adult female passenger, while an eight-month-old female infant later died from injuries sustained in the crash. A total of ten passengers were rescued alive with serious injuries and promptly taken for medical attention.”
The Director further noted that the LASTMA officers acted swiftly to prevent further danger on the busy expressway.
He said: “Our operatives immediately secured the accident scene, evacuated the wrecked vehicles and restored vehicular movement to prevent secondary accidents and ensure public safety.”
The Director conveyed the agency’s condolences to the bereaved families and issued a strong warning to motorists.
“This is a painful reminder of the deadly consequences of excessive speed and poor vehicle maintenance. We urge all drivers, especially commercial operators, to obey traffic regulations and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before taking to t
he road,” he added.
