By Ameenat Hamzat
The Federal Government has unveiled three major national policies aimed at transforming Nigeria’s education sector, with a strong focus on school safety, teacher development, and access to learning for out-of-school children.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, in a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, where he described the unveiling as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s transformation agenda and the ongoing Nigeria Education Sector Reform and Innovation (#NESRI) agenda.
The policies introduced include the National Teachers Policy (NTP), a strengthened framework designed to align teaching in Nigeria with global standards and place teachers at the centre of education reform.
Another policy released is the Guidelines Against Drug and Substance Use in Secondary and Tertiary Institutions, which seeks to protect learners, improve school safety, and reinforce early intervention systems for students.
The third policy, the National Policy on Almajiri Education, aims to modernise the Almajiri system by providing out-of-school learners with literacy, numeracy, life skills, and expanded opportunities.
The Minister highlighted the government’s renewed commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian child has access to quality and inclusive education.
Alausa said: “These policies reflect our collective commitment to quality education for all.”
He stressed that the success of the new reforms will require collaboration among all stakeholders, including government agencies, school leaders, civil society, development partners, and families.
He further noted: “Their impact depends on us, government, school leaders, partners, civil society, and families, working together to drive real change in classrooms and communities.”
The minister added that the unveiling signals a significant shift in the nation’s education system.
“This marks a new chapter of collaboration, stronger systems, and renewed hope fo
r every Nigerian child.”
