Karonga, November 30, Mana: Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Jappie Mhango, says cultural celebrations play a crucial role in strengthening national cohesion and promoting local economic development.
Speaking on Saturday at Mbande Hills in Karonga, where he represented President Professor Peter Arthur Mutharika as guest of honour during the Karonga–Chitipa Cultural Heritage Festival, Mhango said the events go beyond showcasing tradition and serve as platforms for unity among Malawians.

“Cultural festivals offer a unique opportunity to develop internal ties with people of other ethnic groups who patronise the function, leading to national unity,” said Mhango.
He also highlighted the economic gains associated with such gatherings, noting that communities benefit from business activities created by visitors and participants. “Through these festivals, local people stand to benefit from business opportunities like transport, hospitality and communication, which stimulate the local economy,” he said.

Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa commended the collaborative spirit displayed at the event and urged continued support for cultural preservation. “Our culture defines who we are. When communities, leaders and partners come together like this, we strengthen not only our heritage but also the future of our children,” said Kyungu.
The festival also received support from NBS Bank. The bank’s Chief Operating Officer, Shadreck Chikusilo, said the institution remains committed to promoting cultural identity and community development. “As a bank, we believe in investing in the communities we serve. Sponsoring such festivals helps nurture cultural identity, encourages tourism and contributes to sustainable economic empowerment,” said Chikusilo.

This year’s festival featured a strong lineup of traditional leaders, making it one of the most highly attended cultural events in the region. Chiefs who graced the ceremony included Paramount Chief Kyungu, Paramount Chief Kaduya, Paramount Chief Kawinga, Inkosi ya Makosi Gomani, Inkosi ya Makosi M’mbelwa V, Paramount Chief Lundu, Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe and Paramount Chief Katyetye of Zambia. Their presence added royal significance and reinforced cultural unity across districts and borders.
The annual Karonga–Chitipa Cultural Heritage Festival was held under the theme “Unity in Diversity: Many Cultures, One People.”
