MALAWI: Lilongwe Wildlife Centre Hosts First-Ever Nature Festival
By Smile Hamilton Malawi
Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is hosting the inaugural Lilongwe Nature Festival to celebrate nature, creativity, and sustainability.
Patrons are being treated to a variety of activities, including a nature walk, live performances, a green market, and a conservation workshop, among others.
The Centre’s Senior Environmental Education Officer, Steven Makumba, says the festival was organised to give entrepreneurs involved in sustainable practices an opportunity to showcase their work.
“We want to bring together people who are passionate about protecting the environment while promoting innovation and green initiatives,” he said.
Makumba added that the festival is also aimed at raising awareness on the importance of protecting Malawi’s natural resources, especially at a time when environmental degradation is becoming a serious concern. He noted that young people play a major role in conservation efforts and encouraged them to take part in such events.
Participants expressed excitement over the initiative, saying it has created a platform for learning and networking. Some local artists who performed at the festival said the event highlights the strong connection between art and environmental conservation.
The festival is part of the Uniting Resources and Resilience of Biodiversity and Nature project, sponsored by UNDP, which aims to strengthen community involvement in protecting the country’s flora and fauna.
