Malawi: Gonapamuhanya Ceremony Draws Massive Crowds, Championing Cultural Identity

The Gonapamuhanya cultural ceremony in Rumphi District, which began last night, is continuing today at the traditional grounds of Kadumuliro.
Large crowds are flocking to the venue, with visitors arriving from various places, including traditional leaders from Zambia and others from within Malawi.
Today, senior chiefs have begun placing wreaths on the grave of the first Tumbuka king, who was also known as Gonapamuhanya, marking a moment of deep cultural reflection and respect.
Deputy leader of the country, Enoch Chihana, is the guest of honour at this year’s ceremony.
In his remarks, Chihana emphasised the importance of safeguarding Malawi’s cultural heritage. “Our traditions are the backbone of who we are as a nation, and ceremonies like Gonapamuhanya remind us of our identity and unity,” he said.
Traditional leaders also encouraged young people to take pride in their roots. One of the chiefs said, “If the youth understand where they come from, they will know where they are going. Culture is not just history, it is our future.”
The ceremony is also showcasing traditional dances such as Ingoma, Malipenga, and Chioda, with performers from across the region entertaining the audience. Organisers say the dances symbolise unity and act as a bridge between generations.
Local business owners around Kadumuliro have expressed excitement over the economic boost the ceremony brings. Vendors selling food, crafts, and cultural attire say the event has created rare business opportunities. “This ceremony helps us a lot. We earn more in these few days than in many weeks,” said one vendor.
Cultural activists have praised the continued strength of Gonapamuhanya, saying the event remains a vital platform for promoting the Tumbuka identity and preserving traditions that risk being forgotten in modern times.
