NIGERIA: NAFDAC Sets December 2025 Deadline For Ban On Alcohol In Sachets And Small Bottles
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced that the total ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small plastic or glass bottles below 200ml will take full effect by December 2025.
According to the Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, the enforcement of the ban follows a directive from the Nigerian Senate and the endorsement of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. She noted that the decision aligns with the agency’s core mandate to protect public health and safeguard vulnerable populations especially children, adolescents, and young adults from the harmful effects of alcohol consumption.
Professor Adeyeye clarified that the ban is not punitive but protective, stressing that it is backed by scientific evidence and public health considerations. She maintained that the government cannot continue to prioritise short-term economic gains over the well-being and safety of its citizens.
She further disclosed that NAFDAC will continue working with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch nationwide sensitisation campaigns. These efforts, she said, will focus on enlightening the public about the health and social dangers associated with consuming alcohol packaged in sachets and small bottles.
The move marks a decisive step in the federal government’s broader effort to curb substance abuse and promote healthier living amon
