The World Bank has approved a proposal by the Malawi Government to include all urban city councils as beneficiaries of the Bank-funded Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) 2.0 project, valued at $150 million (approximately K260 billion).
Minister of Local Government Ben Phiri confirmed the development to Zodiak Online, saying it follows a series of engagements and a meeting he held with World Bank officials on Tuesday.
He explained that the funding remains performance-based, rewarding councils that meet established standards in governance, service delivery, and financial management.
Phiri further disclosed that all eight urban city councils have now qualified for the grants.
Meanwhile, Executive Director for the Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA), Hadrod Mkandawire, has urged city, municipal, and town councils to address existing inefficiencies before accessing the funds, saying this will enhance their capacity to deliver on development goals.
