By Deborah Akur Chol, South Sudan
The Bank of South Sudan (BoSS) proudly inaugurated its Rumbek Currency Centre in Lakes State. The grand ceremony attracted notable attendees, including Hon. Athian Diing Athian, the National Minister of Finance and Planning; BoSS Governor Dr. Addis Ababa Othow; Lakes State Governor Rin Tueny Mabor; BoSS Deputy Governor Hon. Rita Nyankiir Akoon; members of the BoSS Board; Lakes State Parliament representatives; and local community leaders.
This inauguration signifies a pivotal advancement in the BoSS’s mission to broaden financial services and enhance banking infrastructure throughout South Sudan. What started as a vision in 2013 has now materialized into reality. Several years ago, the then-BoSS Governor Hon. Koryom Mayiik, alongside Dr. Addis Ababa Othow, then a senior manager at the Bank, and Hon. Rita Nyankir, laid the foundation stone for what is now a cornerstone of South Sudan’s financial system the Rumbek Currency Centre.
The foundation was ceremonially laid by President H.E. Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, underscoring a commitment to advancing financial services nationwide and making banking more accessible to the populace. The completion of this impressive facility fulfills that longstanding promise.
The Rumbek Currency Centre stands as a monument to this journey, symbolizing progress, institutional resilience, and the steadfast quest for financial inclusion and stability for all South Sudanese citizens. The facility boasts a three-story main building with spacious offices equipped with clean water and sanitation facilities, ample meeting areas, a clinic, kitchens, and dining spaces. Furthermore, secure currency vaults are located in the basement, constructed to the highest safety standards to protect financial operations.
The Bank has expanded its footprint to Wau, Malakal, Nimule, Yei, and Aweil, completed fencing and foundational works for staff housing in Kuajok, and is currently constructing the main branch in Juba. Additionally, the Bank has acquired land in Bentiu, Panriang, and Yambio for future projects.
Last year, President H.E. Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit inaugurated the Bank of South Sudan’s inaugural twelve-story building in Juba, now serving as the BoSS headquarters.
Governor Dr. Addis Ababa Othow Akondit expressed gratitude for the support and leadership of President H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, highlighting the collective dedication of Bank officials working together as a united team to achieve this significant milestone.
