The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are leading intensified search and rescue operations in Marakwet East following a deadly landslide that has claimed at least 21 lives and left over 30 people missing.

The landslide, triggered by heavy rains on Friday night, swept through villages in Chesongoch, Embobut/Embolot, Mbobut-Mborot, Endo, and Sambir, burying homes and displacing dozens of families.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who toured the affected areas on Sunday, described the tragedy as heartbreaking.
“We are racing against time to save lives and reassure a distraught community that we share in their pain,” Murkomen said.

At least 25 injured survivors have been evacuated to nearby hospitals, while families living in high-risk zones are being relocated.
The government has dispatched emergency relief supplies including food, blankets, and mattresses, alongside a psychosocial support team to assist bereaved families.

Multi-agency teams drawn from the KDF, National Police Service, NYS, Red Cross, and county government remain on the ground despite access challenges caused by floods and blocked roads.
Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert as heavy rains continue across the region.
