SPORTS: Kenya’s Harambee Starlets Edge Closer to WAFCON Qualification After 3–1 Win Over Gambia

Kenya’s Harambee Starlets put up a spirited display to defeat Gambia 3–1 in a thrilling first-leg encounter, taking a major step toward qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.


The Starlets dominated proceedings from the onset, displaying superior pace, tactical discipline, and creativity in attack. The victory puts Kenya in a strong position ahead of the return leg, as the team seeks to make a comeback to the continental stage.
The win has been hailed across the country as a testament to the growing strength of women’s football in Kenya. President William Ruto joined Kenyans in celebrating the team’s success, describing it as a proud moment for the nation.
“Hearty congratulations to our gallant Harambee Starlets for the 3–1 triumph over Gambia, a commanding performance that propels Kenya closer to qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco,” said President Ruto.
The President praised the team’s discipline and resilience, expressing confidence that they will finish the job in the return leg.
The Starlets are set to travel to Gambia for the decisive second leg, where they will aim to seal their ticket to Morocco and continue inspiring a new generation of women in sports.
