KENYA: Raila Jr Takes The Family Mantle In Cultural Ceremony Presided Over By Luo Elders
By Lapit Moses Punyuah, Bondo, Siaya County, Kenya
In a deeply symbolic Luo ritual held at the late Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga’s Opoda Farm in Bondo, his surviving son Raila Odinga Junior was formally installed as head of the family, marking the next chapter in the Odinga lineage.

The proceedings, led by Senator Oburu Odinga, acting as the family patriarch and cultural custodian, began with the traditional liedo ritual: Raila Jr’s head was symbolically shaved, signifying renewal and assumption of domestic authority.
Following the ritual, Raila Jr was handed a spear and shield, significant symbols of leadership and protection in Luo tradition, and performed a brief dance to seal his role. “The seat of power in this home now rests with Junior, together with his mother,” Oburu declared.
According to Luo customs, such succession rites take place on the fourth day after a patriarch’s burial, the official end of mourning (“chieng’ mar ang’wen”) and the start of new leadership within the homestead.
Oburu clarified that while Junior assumes responsibility for the immediate household, he himself remains clan‐patriarch for the wider Odinga family.
As Raila Jr steps into this new role, the eyes of the family, the community and the nation remain on him, not just as heir to a household, but as inheritor of a storied legacy.
