It is now official. Enock Chihana has been sworn in as the Second Vice President of Malawi, taking the oath of office administered by the Deputy Chief Justice of the Republic of Malawi.

Chihana’s appointment follows the recent September 16 General Election, during which his party, the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), entered into an electoral alliance with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The collaboration between the two parties was seen as a strategic move to strengthen governance and political stability in the country.

The appointment of Chihana is in accordance with Section 80 (5) of the laws of Malawi, which outlines the legal framework for the designation of the Second Vice President. Analysts say that his role is expected to enhance representation and support national development agendas.
Speaking after taking the oath, Chihana expressed his commitment to serving the nation, saying he would work tirelessly to ensure that the government meets its promises to Malawians. Political observers note that his inclusion in the leadership team could influence key policy directions, particularly in areas aligned with AFORD’s agenda.
This marks a historic moment for both Chihana and AFORD, reaffirming the significance of political alliances in Malawi’s democratic process.
