BREAKING: Court Grants Bail To Journalist Fejiro Oliver In Alleged Cyberstalking Case
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
A Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, has granted journalist and activist Fejiro Oliver bail in the two separate charges instituted against him by the Inspector-General of Police.
His lead counsel, Inibehe Effiong, announced the development on Thursday, stating that the court found merit in the applications submitted on Oliver’s behalf.
Oliver had been arraigned on allegations of cyberstalking and defamation involving public office holders in Delta State, charges filed under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
The police alleged that Oliver published statements on social media aimed at damaging the reputations of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator Ede Dafinone.
His arrest dates back to September 18, 2025, when he was taken from his Abuja office and flown to Asaba.
The arrest followed a petition filed by aides to the governor accusing him of publishing posts that included claims about secret travels, awarding lucrative contracts, and election malpractice.
At his court appearance, Oliver’s legal team argued that the continuation of his detention without bail was unlawful. The court, upon reviewing the argument, granted bail for both counts, citing merit in the bail applications.
Oliver had been remanded at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre pending the court’s ruling.
The court had adjourned the bail hearing to October 16, and the bail decision has been handed down at the schedule.
Rights groups have expressed relief at the development, urging the government and law enforcement agencies to respect judicial decisions and uphold press freedom.
Supporters note that Oliver’s prolonged detention had sparked outcry as a potential case of political persecution, given his work investigating corruption in Delta State.
