Malawi: IGP Luhanga Declares ‘I Am Inspector General For Everybody’
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Richard Luhanga, has urged officers in the Malawi Police Service (MPS) to embrace teamwork, performance, and discipline as the foundation of effective policing.

Luhanga made the remarks during his maiden Management Meeting held on October 14, 2025, at the National Police Headquarters in Area 30, Lilongwe. The meeting brought together Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners from all six policing regions across the country, alongside Heads of Branches from the headquarters.
The meeting was held under the theme “Dancing to a Leadership Challenge.”
“As Inspector General, I will serve every officer and every Malawian equally. I am IGP for everybody,” declared Mr. Luhanga.
He emphasized that the 2025 General Elections are now over, and it is time for the Malawi Police Service to shift focus from the electoral period to the delivery of quality and professional service.
Addressing operational reforms, the IGP announced plans to streamline the number of roadblocks across the country in order to enhance efficiency, reduce public inconvenience, and minimize corruption allegations.
On discipline and uniform, Mr. Luhanga reminded officers that adherence to the dress code is not optional but a requirement that reflects the image and integrity of the Malawi Police Service. “Our uniform is our identity,” he said.
He further called for the effective implementation and monitoring of High Command resolutions to ensure that decisions made at the top translate into tangible actions on the ground.
To motivate performance, the IGP revealed that the MPS will adopt a results-based management system, where rewards and recognition will depend on measurable achievements. “Performance, discipline, and integrity will be the new yardsticks,” he stressed.
In conclusion, Mr. Luhanga urged all Commissioners to take his message to every police station and inspire officers under their command.
“Together, we can build a Police Service that every Malawian can trust and be proud of,” he said.
