NIGERIA: First Lady Urges Collective Action To Empower Nigerian Girls
By Hamzat Ameenat, Lagos, Nigeria
The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to unite in empowering girls across the nation to reach their full potential and become active contributors to national development.
Mrs Tinubu made the call in a statement commemorating the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated annually on October 11. This year’s theme, “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis,” underscores the resilience of girls who continue to thrive despite social and economic challenges.
The First Lady urged: “Let us come together to support our girls to reach their maximum potential. Inclusive opportunities for girls are essential for national growth and sustainable development.”
The First Lady described the day as a powerful reminder of the struggles faced by millions of girls in Nigeria and globally, including barriers to education, early marriage, gender-based violence, and displacement caused by crises.
She paid tribute to the courage of girls who defy these odds, noting that their determination continues to inspire hope and shape a better future.
“To every brave girl striving to reach the classroom, walking miles for water, or carrying the quiet strength of displacement — you are seen, you are heard, and you are valued. Your courage lights the way to a brighter future,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to championing programs that safeguard the rights of girls, particularly in areas of education, health, and personal safety. She emphasised that investing in girls yields returns for families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
She added: “Every investment in girls’ education, health, and safety is an investment in stronger families and a more prosperous Nigeria.”
The First Lady also called on community leaders, families, and institutions to build safe and supportive spaces where girls can dream, learn, and lead without fear or limitation.
“Today, on International Day of the Girl Child, let us remember the daily struggles of our girls and commit to creating an environment where they can thrive,” Mrs Tinubu concluded.
The International Day of the Girl Child, established by the United Nations in 2012, seeks to highlight the rights of girls and promote actions that address the unique challenges they face around the world.
