MALAWI: British Citizens Stage Musical Inspired by William Kamkwamba’s Life
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
A group of British citizens is producing a theatrical musical inspired by the remarkable story of Malawian innovator William Kamkwamba, who, despite growing up in poverty and with limited education, built a wind turbine that brought electricity to his village and powered a water pump for irrigation during the 2001 famine.

Richy Hughes, a theatre scriptwriter from the United Kingdom, told Zodiak Online that Kamkwamba’s story serves as a powerful reminder of how individuals from humble beginnings can rise above their circumstances to transform their communities.
“We were deeply moved by William’s determination and creativity. His story shows how hope, innovation, and courage can change lives, even in the toughest conditions,” Hughes said.
He added that the production, which draws inspiration from the popular film The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, will celebrate Malawi’s culture through music, dance, and traditional costumes, reflecting the country’s resilience and aspirations.
In his remarks, George Sangwani Harrison—who was born in Malawi and whose mother resides in Mzimba—said the team’s goal is to showcase the musical in the United Kingdom and beyond, so that audiences around the world can appreciate the spirit and talent of the Malawian people.
The announcement was made during an event organized by Lexa Harrison Mkandawire of Kurya Ndiko Uku CBO, who hosted an early Mother’s Day celebration for local women. The occasion also provided an opportunity for the visiting British team to explore ways they can continue supporting women empowerment initiatives in Malawi.
Harrison expressed optimism that such cultural collaborations will strengthen ties between Malawi and the UK, while inspiring young people to believe in their potential.
