A group of cancer patients on Wednesday, staged protests outside the Social Health Authority (SHA) headquarters in Nairobi, demanding a review of the current cancer treatment package, which they say is insufficient.

The demonstrators carried placards and chanted slogans, decrying what they termed “medical neglect”, saying the KSh 550,000 cap provided by SHA for the entire cancer treatment cycle is too little to meet their needs.

They argued that the cost of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and medication far exceeds the current allocation, forcing many families into debt or discontinuing treatment altogether.
“Cancer treatment is expensive. KSh 550,000 cannot even cover two cycles for some patients,” one protester lamented.
The group is calling on the government to restructure SHA policies, increase the cancer cover, and recognise the growing burden of the disease in the country.
SHA officials are yet to issue a formal response to the concerns raised by the patients.
