NIGERIA: Senate Resumes Plenary With Security, Electoral Reforms Topping Agenda
By Hamzat Ameenat, Lagos, Nigeria
After several weeks of recess, the Nigerian Senate will today, reconvene plenary with a crowded agenda dominated by long-awaited debates on national security and electoral reforms.
The resumption marks the end of a legislative lull that began after the upper chamber extended its annual recess by two weeks, from September 23 to October 7, delaying critical discussions on several national priorities.
Among the key items slated for consideration are the proposed National Security Summit, Electoral Act Amendment Bill, Constitution Alteration Bill (2025), and the National Assembly Budget and Research Office Bill, a two-decade-old proposal aimed at strengthening fiscal oversight through independent budget analysis.
In an internal memo signed by Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, senators were informed of the adjusted resumption date.
The memo read in part: “This is to respectfully inform Distinguished Senators that the resumption of plenary sitting of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, September 23, 2025, has been shifted to Tuesday, October 7, 2025. Any inconvenience this short notice may cause is deeply regretted.”
Although no official reason was publicly disclosed, however, it was gathered that the extension was to allow lawmakers to fully participate in activities marking the nation’s 65th Independence Day celebrations on October 1.
As plenary resumes today, public attention is fixed on whether lawmakers will translate their legislative rhetoric into tangible progress on reforms that directly impact Nigeria’s governance and security architecture.
