By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
Unofficial results from Malawi’s presidential election held on Tuesday, are beginning to take shape as vote tabulation continues across the country.
The early national subtotal shows a tight contest between leading political parties, with counting still underway.
So far, tallied results indicate that Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is in the lead with 1,612,890 votes, representing 54.8 per cent of the votes counted.
He is followed by Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who has garnered 1,195,280 votes, translating to 40.6 per cent of the tally.
Meanwhile, Dalitso Kabambe of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) has so far received 134,007 votes, accounting for 4.6 per cent of the counted ballots.
Election officials have emphasised that these are unofficial results and that the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will release the official and final results once all polling stations have been fully verified.
Speaking to reporters in Blantyre, a MEC spokesperson said, “We urge Malawians to remain calm and patient as the counting process is still ongoing. The Commission is committed to delivering free, fair, and credible results.”
Observers from regional and international bodies, including the Southern African Development Community (SADC), have praised the peaceful conduct of the polls while also urging transparency in the tabulation process.
Malawians are now waiting anxiously as the final figures are compiled, with many noting that the outcome of this election will shape the nation’s political and economic direction for years to come.
