NIGERIA: Ibas Declares Tinubu’s Emergency Mandate in Rivers Fully Achieved
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.), says he has successfully delivered on the emergency mandate handed to him by President Bola Tinubu to stabilise the state and restore democratic governance at the grassroots.
Speaking at Government House, Port Harcourt, on Friday during the presentation of the local government election report by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Ibas recalled that the President, on March 18, 2025, directed him to restore order, rebuild institutions, and return Rivers to democratic rule.
Ibas stated: “With the successful conduct and swearing-in of local government chairmen and councillors across the 23 local governments, I believe we have decisively achieved the mandate that we were given.”
He praised RSIEC for conducting what he described as a credible and transparent election, free of harassment, and where voters freely expressed their choices. He assured that the government would review the RSIEC report and issue a white paper soon.
RSIEC Chairman, Dr. Mike Odey, who presented the report, hailed the election as a “historic achievement,” noting that it was organised and concluded within 30 days, an unprecedented feat in Nigeria’s electoral history.
He added that the report outlined challenges and recommendations for strengthening future elections in the state.
Ibas expressed gratitude to security agencies, state officials, and his team for their roles in ensuring peace and order during the process.
