MALAWI: African Traditional Religion Opens New Shrine In Machinjiri
By Smile Hamilton, Malawi
The African Traditional Religion community has recently established a new shrine in Machinjiri, Blantyre.
The inauguration ceremony, which included the pouring of libations, also saw the election of new leaders to guide the shrine’s activities.

During the event, libation was performed as a ritual offering to seek blessings from the Creator for good rains and a plentiful harvest.
One of the custodians of the shrine, Malufela Masese, said the establishment of the new site is a sign of progress.

“The opening of this shrine is proof that we are not going backwards. We are moving forward in uplifting African Traditional Religion and preserving black cultural heritage,” he explained.

The Lost History Foundation, which supported the ceremony, emphasised the importance of preserving Malawi’s cultural identity. A representative from the organisation said, “Our role is to make sure history is not lost. This shrine will help the younger generation understand where we are coming from.”
